Botox Therapy for Ischemic Digits

Well, the next time you hear that somebody got a botox shot, it might not be the usual population trying to beat the wrinkles that age brings to their faces, but someone who needs treatment for an ischemic digit! In a study which startlingly reveals that there is a good chance that botox might as well be effective as a treatment option for ischemic digits, there are also some other interesting points:

1. The rapid onset of action indicates some other point of action of the drug besides the usual action at the level of Ach.

2. The long lasting effect of the drug is unexpected.

3. The effect on patients with advanced connective tissue disorder is minimal, though the results are promising for those with a newly diagnosed condition.

Well, time will tell whether it is just a flash in the pan or there is more to it as further research is conducted to elucidate the exact mechanism(s) of action and dosing patterns and adverse effect profile, but till then, one may say that this holds a chance to improve the way Raynaud’s Phenomenon is managed!
